Hi, I'm Ken Levine.
Recently I had a Big Realization.
With all the writing classes and books around, I realized there's one thing none of them teach - what it’s actually like being in a sitcom writing room.
Practically all sitcoms are “room written” these days (even single camera shows like Modern Family). That’s when a dysfunctional group of funny, creative people somehow manage, collectively, to craft a brilliantly funny (or at least not embarrassing) script while suffering from incredible time pressure and personality clashes.
I found myself imagining a weekend workshop that gives you the hands-on experience you could only get in a professional writing room.
A cross between a seminar/workshop and “comedy writing fantasy camp.”
I mentioned the idea on my blog, a bunch of people responded, and the next thing I knew I was spending two intense days (and nights) with 20 talented writers from all over the world.
It was an amazing weekend. Exhausting and exhilarating. Seeing the progress our attendees made truly was inspiring.
You'll work with a small team of fellow writers, ranging from beginners to semi-pros to future Emmy winners.
The 20 attendees will be divided into four writing teams. It’s pretty much guaranteed that by the end of the weekend you’ll leave with several new lifelong friends. (And who knows? Maybe even a new writing partner.)
I'’ll be moving from team to team, giving you the best of whatever expertise I've picked up in 35 years of TV & movie comedy writing.
You'll experience what it’s really like to be in a writers' room —complete with bad take-out food and a script in trouble.
After your team has “fixed” the script, a select group of professional Hollywood actors will perform it for everyone, “live.”
You’ll see what works and what doesn’t.
And then have the opportunity to fix it again.
I'm looking for 20 nice, smart, interesting people who want to experience what it's really like to write contemporary TV comedy. Your resumé doesn't matter.
Los Angeles, California
Renaissance Los Angeles Airport Hotel
Saturday & Sunday, October 17 - 18, 2015
$1,600 per attendee
If you're coming from outside the Los Angeles area, I strongly recommend you stay at the hotel where we're holding the Sitcom Room: the Renaissance Los Angeles Airport Hotel. I don’t get any kind of kickback from them, but Saturday is almost certain to be a long night and it’ll be much easier finding your room if it’s in the same building.
The hotel has a free shuttle to pick you up at the airport. If you're flying in, it’s a great location.
Also, you'll enjoy it a lot more if you’re staying at the same place as your fellow writers.
After you've registered, we’ll send you a special hotel link with a really low rate ($119) that we've negotiated for this year’s Sitcom Room attendees.
You'll learn a helluva lot, have some laughs, get great practical experience, and I promise we’ll never analyze CASABLANCA.
Sorry, no. Our attendees have come from all over the U.S. and Canada, as well as from Australia, Peru, Austria, Denmark, Norway, England, Germany and Ireland.
Obviously, these are highly motivated individuals. If you live far from L.A. and are motivated enough to travel for this unique experience, I’d love to see you in October. But please don’t wait for The Sitcom Room to come to your neighborhood, because that won’t be possible.
I haven’t yet opened registration.
If you’re already on my Sitcom Room Alert List, I’ll email you 24 hours before we open registration, to give you a head start on the rest of the world.
If you’re not already on the list, join the Alert List here.
